Perito Moreno Glacier Experience
<br />
This morning we depart for an unforgettable full-day tour to Los Glaciares National Park,
declared in 1981 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The park was created in 1937 and refers to
the largest ice cap outside Antarctica and Greenland with 47 large glaciers. This ice field is the
world’s third-largest reserve of fresh water. Due to the area’s geographical location, glaciers here
were formed at a low altitude of only 4,900 feet while in other parts of the world, glaciers are
found at altitudes of above 8,200 feet. Visit the Perito Moreno: one of the only 3 Patagonian
glaciers that are still growing, despite global warming. The glacier’s massive ice wall is 3 miles
wide with an average height of 240 feet above the surface of the lake; however, 2/3’s of the
Perito Moreno is underwater, making it a total of 558 feet of thick ice! The glacier can be safely
observed from a promenade located on a cliff overlooking the constantly moving ice. These
amazing facts, as well as the easy access to the site, made the Perito Moreno one of the most
visited glaciers in the World. Our tour includes a boat ride from where we watch the icebergs
cracking and falling into the lake, creating awe-inspiring thunders. During the day, enjoy lunch
at the Los Nativos Restaurant.
Tonight, a dinner at the LaTablita Restaurant.
Meals Included Today: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
OPTIONAL MINI ICE TREKKING is: $260 per person.
Begin your journey from the hotel to Glacier National Park, where you’ll embark on a boat ride from Bahia Bajo las Sombras (Bay of Shadows), across the Rico arm of Lake Argentino. This 20-minute journey offers panoramic views of the Perito Moreno Glacier’s southern wall.
Upon disembarking, you’ll reach a refuge where experienced trekking guides will lead a 30-minute hike through a dense lengas forest to the glacier’s edge. Here, you’ll gear up with crampons and receive ice trekking instructions. This two-hour glacier walk provides a unique opportunity to intimately explore the ancient ice, including its peaks, cracks, interior lagoons, and deep blue sinks. The glacier’s surface offers excellent lake views.
After the trek, there’s free time for lunch (box lunch recommended). Post lunch, you’ll return across the lake and walk to the boardwalks on the glacier’s east wall, offering another perspective of this remarkable ice river. The day concludes with a return to your Calafate hotel.
** You must be under 65 to do the trek- anyone opting not to do it, will still do a tour of the glacier from the boat.
Day 8: Saturday, March 9
El Calafate to Buenos Aires and a Night of Tango!
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Buenos Aires. Upon arrival at the domestic airport in
Buenos Aires, meet our representative and transfer to your hotel. Tonight, embark on a journey
from your hotel to the vibrant district of Puerto Madero, a recently revitalized area that sets the
stage for an enchanting evening. The roots of Tango music can be traced back to the late 19th
century, born in the southern suburbs of Buenos Aires known as the “arrabales.” These
neighborhoods were a melting pot of cultures, bringing together Argentine natives, Italian and
Spanish immigrants, African descendants, and people from diverse backgrounds.
Each evening, a masterful combination of movement, color, sound, aroma, and taste transports
you to a bygone era, where the Tango emerges from the depths of history and unfolds in the vivid
reality of an exceptional, sensual, and electrifying show. To complement this extraordinary
experience, an exclusive gastronomic offering awaits, where the delicate nuances of fragrances
and textures, paired with fine wines, take center stage, enriching your senses even further.
