Sadly, she did not get the chance to return to the ocean.

The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington’s westcoast where she could live the rest of her days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami house and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killers whales are social animals and are close to their family members until they die. Lolita’s Health
Lolita is gorgeous, but her health continues to decline. She has been a source of concern for animal welfare organizations who would like to see her released to the wild. Lolita has been a resident at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and was an attraction for tourists for many years. She has been fighting persistent illnesses and an infection that has left her in a fragile state.
The Miami Seaquarium is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not disclosed information about Lolita’s current health. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These updates reveal that Toki is ageing rapidly and that her health has declined.
It is unclear what specific health issues are affecting the orca, since her captor is not obliged to disclose the information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies collected from Sea World. This shows that kidney diseases often play an important factor in the death of orcas kept in captivity.
Despite these ongoing health concerns there is a lot of hope that Lolita may be closer to living in the wild than ever before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has made a pledge to removing the whale of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.
The decision comes after years of public pressure, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a seaside sanctuary in which she can swim in the ocean and even meet the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately, these plans came too late for the beloved whale who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal problem.
